After experiencing an overwhelmingly positive response and receiving hundreds of applications, we accepted 30 interns for the Summer 2022 Internship. Since then, we have chosen to lead small, focused cohorts. We are happy to announce that we are now accepting applications.

By the end of the internship, you’ll gain valuable experience that’ll give you a highly competitive edge in today’s employment market. You’ll be able to demonstrate to employers that you’re organized, determined, and resourceful—that you can succeed where others fail. You’ll also make valuable connections with other interns with similar interests and career goals. Our interns have used their experience in this firm as a stepping stone, securing themselves internships at prestigious firms like Morgan Stanley.

Associate Internship

As the Acquisition Associate Intern, you’ll be in a public-facing role and represent Leaf Group of NY. You will be reaching out to M&A intermediaries in the lower and lower-middle market to source deals. You’ll take ownership of each deal that you source and coordinate with analysts to arrive at a valuation. This is a minor leadership position because you will be coordinating the work of analyst interns.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Research and identify M&A intermediaries, investment banks, and business brokers
  • Develop relationships with intermediaries/brokers to secure confidential business listings
  • Evaluate acquisition opportunities rapidly by assessing key financial performance indicators and qualitative indicators
  • Identify sources of capital (e.g. investment banks, lenders, and capital partners) and establish a relationship with them

Analyst Internship

As the Acquisition Analyst Intern, you’ll be coordinating with Associates and Associate Interns to produce valuations and financial models that inform how much we’re able to offer to a business owner. This is an internal-facing role.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct industry research to determine the viability of an acquisition
  • Conduct financial analyses to arrive at a well-reasoned DCF valuation using the provided model
  • Produce financial models to support 

Common Qualifications

The following qualifications are shared amongst all internships.

  • Basic understanding or ability to learn basic business terminology, such as gross revenue, net profits, EBITDA, SDE, etc.
  • Ability to write in a professional and formal style consistent with business environments
  • Laptop or computer
  • Stable internet connection
  • Basic knowledge of spreadsheet software (we use Google Sheets)
  • Ability to use Slack, Google Suite, and Google Meets

Preferred Traits

We look for individuals who exhibit traits that will lead them to succeed regardless of their technical knowledge and ability.

  • Reliable. At LGNY, we deeply value reliability. We believe that while one can be educated and trained in the necessary skills needed to do the work, work ethic is not something that we can train interns in in such a short amount of time. It is paramount that you are reliable and responsive.
  • Clear communication. The ability to communicate clearly and concisely is important in an environment in which you’re interacting with business leaders. You will be required to check in every business day via Slack.
  • Organized. You should be able to follow an organized system of work and keep basic records updated.
  • Trainable. You should be able to take direction and feedback and implement it.
  • Self-starter. You should take initiative to learn the things you need. We are an entrepreneurial organization and expect our team members to ask questions, be resourceful, and take an active role in their own development.

Scheduling and Availability

The schedule is somewhat flexible. You will need to be dedicate 2 hours a day with a minimum of 10 hours a week. You’ll also set a minimum of 1 hour each workday as your set “office hours” during which you are expected to be focused and reachable. You will be expected to be proactive about your daily check-ins. We use Slack to communicate. All messages need to be acknowledged or replied to within 24 hours.

Compensation

This is an unpaid position. However, a small stipend may become available. Please check with your university if stipends are allowed. There will be the possibility of being considered for a future paid position, either in the newly acquired business, in the business of a future acquisition, or as a part of the holding company, but there is no promise of a job.
For outstanding interns who demonstrate reliability and effort, we’ll happily provide stellar references for you for the entirety of your career. We are also proud to offer mentorship to the right interns even beyond the duration of the internship.

Learning Outcomes & Supervision

Interns will be working with the Managing Partner, who will provide one-on-one coaching and feedback. As a Master of Science in Education, Mr. Ip takes great pleasure in providing interns with an individualized internship plan as well as regular feedback on strengths and areas of growth. Interns emerge from the internship with evidence of the following skills and abilities:
  • Sales and persuasion skills. Interns will be able to develop relationships with key players in the M&A field.
  • Analytical ability. Interns will be able to analyze acquisition opportunities and evaluate the risks and explore ways to mitigate them.
  • Strategic thinking. Interns will be able to develop strategic plans that are aligned with the firm’s needs.
  • Business valuation skills. Interns will be able to run DCF analyses to arrive at a valuation for the target acquisition.
  • Knowledge of ground-level activities necessary in the acquisitions process, ranging from deal sourcing, deal analysis, and sourcing capital.
  • Real-world experience and understanding of requirements of lenders, investors, capital partners, and business owners.
We will work with your institution to provide academic credit.

After that, if we both consider the internship to be a mutual fit, a more in-depth interview may be scheduled and an official offer will be extended.
